Celebrate Chinese New Year at the Academy with art activities and entertainment related to the new Lunar Year. On February 21, 2010, Bank of Hawaii hosts Family Sunday at the Honolulu Academy of Arts from 11 am to 5 pm.
Featuring entertainment and activities suitable for families and people of all ages, the goal is to provide new and interesting ways to explore the Academy’s galleries through gallery scavenger hunts, art activities, demonstrations, film screenings and entertainment.
Art Activities + Demonstrations
Narcissus Bulb Carving, 11 a.m.–3 p.m.
Visitors can learn about the art of crab-claw cultivation and see examples from the recent workshop put on at the Academy Art Center by Gilman Hu, Stephen Fong, Jo-Anne Yokota and friends.
Calligraphy, 11 a.m.–3 p.m.
Calligrapher Linda Wyrgatsch will teach the basic strokes and characters of Chinese calligraphy.
Be in an art project, 11 a.m.–5 p.m.
Artist-in-residence Elizabeth Curtis is working on a portrait project entitled The Visitors. People interested in participating as a sitter in either an individual or small group portrait can sign up at the Visitor Information Center at the Academy upon arrival. ENTERTAINMENT
Phoenix Dance Chamber, 1 p.m. -1:30 p.m.
High school students showcase various Chinese Folk, Classical and Modern dances.
Chinese Lion Dance, 12 a.m.-1 p.m.
Lions from the Lee Shaolin Boxing Academy will travel through the museum grounds to exorcise bad spirits and summon luck & fortune for the new year. After the dance, visitors can join them in the courtyard for a martial arts demonstration.
