First Friday Art Walk – November 6

Don’t forget, tonight is the First Friday Art Walk in the Arts District of Honolulu. From 5 to 9 pm, you can participate in events at various venues – free, unless otherwise noted:

The ARTS at Marks Garage
comPRESS — Hawaii artists explore Community, Communication, & Print. A reaction to the expansion of electronic communication & the demise of newspapers & printed media by Honolulu Printmakers, the oldest printmaking organization in the U.S. Thru 11/21. Featuring ADHDJ spinning rock records from KTUH and live rock from Alice Neel. Serving Big Aloha Brewery till 10pm!

The Awakening — 3:00pm – 12:00am. The first collaboration of internationally recognized artists Andy King and Basil Sakamoto. Thru oil painting and graphic design, their visions reflect a shared theme of cultural awareness and representation. Live DJ and coctails served all night. Fundraiser for Kenneth Brimer — in support of his recnt diagnosis of Chronic Lymphotic Leukemia. For the entire month of November- Black Cat Studio will be offering “tattoo for Kenny”. Proceeds will help with medical expenses and traveling to the mainland for procedures . When booking a tattoo appointment please mention you are supporting Kenny.

Hawaii State Art Museum
Live From the Lawn — World Beat, 6:00pm-9:00pm. Featuring Taiko of the Pacific, Nigerian Drummer Sango, Middle Eastern music from the Tamr Hennas Ensemble, Carribean Steel drums from Greg and Junko MacDonald, and Pacific-styled exotica from Don Tiki. In the galleries: “Ho’oulu: The Inspiration of Hula and Where we Live.”

Art Exhibition — 5:00-9:00pm, Free. Performances — 9:00pm-2:00am, $10. With what wit would one say: The Last First Friday @ ong king…Cuban orishas with Eli’s Drum, the guitar of Ariel Eisen, Taimane Gardner, Matty Chamberlain, and Christina Nelson. Poetic wonders Bridget Gray, Kealoha, Travis T, Derrin Cambra, Tui-Z, and Touring Slam Poet from the mainland here for the first and final time. Art show with visual wonders by Luc Beauchamp, and DAL. Juggler Loco-Moco, fire from Hawaii Fire Artists, dance from Shakti Dance Movement, theatre art from HUTC and the mad words of MC SEE. Quadraphonix grooves us into our bodies after Breathe of Fire ignites our spark.

Kino Wa’a — Opening Reception. Works by Richard Kupihea Romero. The title “Kino Wa’a” literally means “canoe body.” Kupihea explores the concept that the canoe body in Hawaiian cultural context is an amalgamation of various correlations that exist between our physical body and the body of the Hawaiian sailing vessel. Thru 11/28.
